Poem 37

To Do List

Doesnt means it didnt and then went and forgot
Dont was once to do but got tied up in a knot
Cant implies that it will never even take the bet
But hasn’t still knows it could happen yet

Poem 36

Sugar Cane Brixton

From the back of the Nissan
her shawl trimmed
red, gold and green
she strips cane
and carves green coconut
for the men
skylarkin’
outside the pub.
Sweet juice runs
down their chins.

They are children
momentarily.

Poem 35

When I was younger
I thought Oxford Circus
/was/ a circus. That I could
hug tigers in the morning
& see giraffes sticking their
beautiful necks
out of speeding windows.
A Victorian carousel
with its rush hour acrobats

Poem 33

We are made inside stars
in the dying furnaces of suns
expanding into nebulae
our atoms like fading embers
drifted to form life
all life, everywhere.

This is scientific fact
and it is a beautiful thing.

Poem 32

Smile

Smile.
Because
You could be chased
By a crocodile
Or blasted into space
By a rocket missile
Maybe even walking
With a broken bicycle
For a mile
Or, be at the end of a queue,
S l o w l y
M o v i n g
S i n g l e
F i l e.
So, take a while
To Smile.
Smile

Poem 31

Harmony

He squeezes
onto the carriage,
past people
of every colour,
shape and size.

He cannot reach
the handrail, relies
on fellow passengers
to hold him up
and they rely
on him.

It’s only now
he realises
he needs to sneeze.

The living room is a mess
You are a mess
Stop using my spoons

Ode to the Person whose shoulder I read over

How fast you go,
How quick you read,
Through the paper you speed and speed
But please could you just slow down my friend,
Otherwise I wont get to the…

Poem 28

The Resolution

No getting fit, no shifting fat, no gym membership.
No language lesson, no bungee jump, no round-the-world trip.
This change is simple, a cure for January’s blue:
catch your tube, then an eye and smile at somebody new.

Poem 27

Let Us

Empowerment be the language of which music speaks,
Bravery be the stand point of which actions be,
Leadership be the content of which we preach.
Our kids be the future of which we see.
You are the stars that shine so you don’t need to look up any further,
you pave the path for those that come behind you.
You are the future.

Poem 25

A yawn is infectious,
A smile is contagious,
Choose wisely,
What will you spread today?

Poem 24

I’ve seen you run along the tracks of the District Line,
But I’m dwelling on exactly where you live this time.
You left the sunlight & the cats to find a place beneath the city;
And to think that I was satisfied taking the Mickey.

Poem 23

WHO’S WHO

I used to think nurses were women,
I used to think police were men,
I used to think poets were boring,
Until I became one of them.

Poem 22

Caricatures with distorted features, exhausted and weak and trying to get home,
Cheeks to armpits, eyes down, no smiling, don’t make eye contact, stare at your phone.
But these are people, that kiss and weep and laugh dance at weekends,
Real people. Look again, allow yourself to see them.

Poem 21

Japanese Student

Japanese student, Japanese student
Exotic and rare with your hair purple dyed
I saw you inspecting the second hand shop
I so wanted to capture your glittering eye

Oh Japanese student, Japanese student
Where did you get style like that?
And who would of thought that a gold fish bowl
Would have made such a perfect hat.

Poem 20

I saw a dead fish on the pavement & thought “WHAT did you expect?”
There’s no water here stupid, shoulda stayed where it was wet…

Poem 19

And all I can think about
is the river
that separates my house from yours.

We both work such long hours,
long as a toymakers lathe,

that these days
I only cross that river
at sunrise and sunset

Which is why I think
I am falling in love with it.

Poem 18 (COLLABORATION)

SHAKEN TO HEAT THIS LIFE IS RED
COOLS ORANGE DIPPED IN THE SEA
YELLOW THE THREAD HUNG FROM SUN
ON EVERYTHING LIVING IN GREEN
BLUE OCEANS CRACKED BY LAND
INDIGO WORLDS GLOW UNSEEN
SWEET VIOLET SONG MY CITY SKY

Poem 15

Chattering teeth as the cold breeze
hits her on the nape of her neck
her scarf blows back and forth
like a flag in a thunderstorm
and then all is calm as the morning sunrise
She stops, and she smiles.

Poem 14

Chicken Bone

Everytime I step on a discarded chicken bone,
I wonder
how many other soles
have the same batter grease on them.
My shoe is earthed.
Connected by the electricity
Of collected footstomps
Shame no one thought to use a bin

Poem 13

I accelerate, I accelerate, I accelerate, I accelerate,
I accelerate, I –
Never hesitate, never meditate, never get up late
If I get a message on my Face-
Book, never let it wait, I accelerate,
I accelerate, I accelerate –

Poem 12

Measure

Measure days and nights
by the sweet end of a yawn
By handshakes, hugs and high fives
The fag ends, the last kiss of a cold pint.
Measure tomorrow with the knowledge
Today was preparation for the same
You’re a diamond bloke
This is how you polish

Poem 11 (COLLABORATION)

Words are pictures
they fly about
leaping from my mouth as i shout
they roll and writhe and slither
when talking with a whisper.

Words become rainbows,
they glow and sparkle
with my eyes lit up
talking through a smile.

Poem 10

Life is like a tube journey

Life is like a tube journey:
We merely board the train for a short while,
Travelling from station to station.
Knowing nothing of its origin or its final destination.
(this poem does not apply to people living in Morden)

Poem 9

Theology

He tried to think about the zoo,
the bird he’d seen with an anvil head,
slinking lizards in the reptile house.
It had been a good day.

But he remembered the panther enclosure
where he had waited for thirty minutes,
staring up at a dark hut hidden in trees.
Suppose there was no panther.

New Years Resolution #5

Kiss so your front teeth clash against each other’s. When hugging, make sure you crush all lungs. If asked why? Explain how pleasure is part of pain, then pull back and aim your hardest high five.

Poem 7

Baby Sleep

When I’ve had a week of 12am 3am 5am wakes
A new mum awake in a zombie like state
When you do go to sleep
And I need to sleep too
I spend another three hours just gazing at you

Poem 5

Dusk

Twilight patterns can be read by those who take note.
Greying clouds fuse with turquoise and orange
To become vast mosaics above our heads.
Motion is consistent,
Possibility made real.
They gain substance for one moment,
and they are lost.

Poem 4

I’m not looking for trouble,
Trouble always finds me
I recognise it coming-
And I don’t want to see it leave,
Are looking for attention?
Could take some company ?
Come into the blue with me.

Poem 3

The morning lurches slowly into focus
the winter trees are linocuts on blue
the slow train click-clacks yawning in from Essex
and London holds its breath and waits for you.

Poem 1

Mirror Fish

mirror fish, slippery, mercury quick
sharp as a blade, gone in a click
drawn by the heat, when two people meet
soon as you fall in love, they get fishy cold feet
look behind the mirror – theres no-one at all
whats behind a mirror? nothing but a brick wall!
